About Wakefield
The City of Wakefield has a population of approximately 100,00 people, which grows to around 350,00 when you take into account the borough towns of Pontefract, Castleford, Normanton, Knottingley and Featherstone, and although now known for its retail industry, and many of its inhabitants commute to Leeds which is only 11 miles away. This is in stark contrast to the past where Wakefield was known for having one of the largest cattle markets in the country, an extensive wool trade, and nearly 50 coal mines in and around the district. The area also has a strong traditional of playing sport, and in particular Rugby League, Association Football, Cricket and numerous water sport activities take place at Pugney’s Country Park.
Wakefield Council holds an annual Rhubarb Festival in February, celebrating the area’s links and promoting the surviving rhubarb industry. A Farmers’ Market, cookery demonstrations, walks and tours of the forcing sheds are among the attractions. In 2005 Wakefield council erected a sculpture depicting a rhubarb plant in Holmfield Park Wakefield. Twelve farmers who farm within the Rhubarb Triangle applied to have the name “Yorkshire forced rhubarb” added to the list of foods and drinks that have their names legally protected by the European Commission’s Protected Food Name scheme. The application was successful and the farmers in the Rhubarb Triangle were awarded Protected Designation of Origin status (PDO) in February 2010.
Sculptor Barbara Hepworth was born in Wakefield in 1903. There is an art gallery called The Hepworth Wakefield named after her which features her work alongside other local artists such as Henry Moore who was born in Castleford.
